I'm inclined to just go for the MX-990, then I can give my friend my old 780. I'm using a flirc now, and it's okay, but not great because some commands don't work well. The only reason I need/want IP control is for better control of my NVIDIA Shield. If my dealer were still in business, then URC would just send him an advance replacement. My room is complicated enough, that even I wouldn't want to try to wade through all the remotes. I'ts nice that they are willing to do that, but that means I'll be without a remote for who knows how long. But I'd need to ship my old remote to them and wait for them to reprogram it. I called URC and it's $90 for a replacement remote. A friend of mine has an MX-780 and his screen is almost completely black.

I can not tell you the number of times customers call and complain their system they paid good money for is not working, and it all has to do with someone doing something to their network. It still works when there are problems with the network! Many people are not tech savvy and when little Johnny messes with the network or their internet provider comes and changes things the system still works. It has one big advantage over the network based remotes even though IR is antiquated. I also like IR based remotes for certain customers.
#Flirc sticker Bluetooth
I think the Bluetooth and IP are areas where Harmony has an advantage but they are no where near as customizable. But the price of admission for Total Control is simply more than most people will spend on a single room remote. With their Total Control line you get IP and RS-232 but that is less frequently used these days.
#Flirc sticker update
I do wish they would update the CCP remotes to include IP and Bluetooth at a reasonable price point. I have a Tivo in my system and the color buttons are real nice for that and don't take up screen real estate. I can see enjoying the two main buttons and we all have preferences on the way we use our systems. I think the OLED screen just decays or sumthin over time, not from being used daily. 3 years later i dug it out to play with and was disappointed to find the screen had become dark from just sitting in the box, almost as dark as my MX-780 did after 3 years of daily use. I programmed it to make sure it works, then put it back in the box and stashed it away in my closet for future use but never ended up using it. In early 2015 i bought one of the last new R40 consumer model remotes (same OLED screen as MX-780) directly from URC as my older one was growing dark and they would not warranty it. I've discovered that the OLED screen apparently becomes dark after about 3 years whether you use the remote or not. If the posting shows a reddish faded screen then it's OLED. If the screen looks really bright in the posting, ask the seller to provide you with the date code. If it has the original box, the box says LCD Screen on the front (old ones say OLED). So if you see a used one make sure it's the newer version with LCD.

#Flirc sticker code
I have a few of each of these newer versions, with the oldest one having a date code of 0815 on the sticker (August 2015). I use the dual main screen function on the 780 to manage that.Ĭlick to expand. You didn't mention it so you may not be aware - but in 2015 (or maybe even 2014) URC started using LCD screens in the MX-780 (and the Best Buy X-7) instead of the OLED screens that all become dark.
#Flirc sticker tv
I have two systems in the same room - the TV with the Denon AVR on one wall for day time viewing, and the Projector on the other wall for night time viewing. The MX-990 is about $400, and I don't want to spend much more than that. I'm not smart enough remember that clicking the light bulb button twice will turn on the fountain.Īre there any other options I am not aware of? What I don't like about Harmony, and correct me if I am wrong, is that you can't make custom buttons on their touch screen remote. I already own a Harmony HUB that I purchased to play with Alexa commands. The Harmony is great because it can control modern devices via bluetooth and IP. What are the big advantages over the MX-780? The MX-990 seems to be more powerful and more flexible, but I'll need to spend countless hours programming it. I'm sure I can find a decent MX-780 used for a great price and then I'll be done.

I have an MX-780 with an MRF350 and it does everything I need it to do, but the LCD display is almost too dim to read, and therefore needs to be replaced.
